Inane ravings of an irreverent slacker

American Idiocracy(older post)

Posted by Jeff on July 22, 2008

Did you know that 70% of Americans don’t know what the scientific method is? Did you know that over 45% of Americans polled do NOT know how long it takes the earth to revolve around the sun? Did you know that an overwhelming majority of Americans think that the theory of evolution states that we evolved directly from monkeys? Did you know that about 80% of Americans have no concept of what the word “theory” even means in a scientific context? Did you know that 93.4% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

Seriously people, this has been getting under my skin lately. So much so that one of my college application essays was a rant about public scientific literacy! My beef is thus…

If you don’t care about science, fine. If you want to ignore all the facts we’ve learned FROM science, fine. However, if that is your choice, I do NOT want to hear you trying to use science to back up your crazy ideas! No, Intelligent Design is NOT science. Anyone who thinks it is doesn’t know what science is. No, the law of attraction is NOT supported by quantum mechanics. I guarantee that anyone who claims that it is has never taken a class on or read a legitimate book about quantum mechanics. No, the Earth is NOT 6000 years old. Anyone who claims that geological dating methods are flawed simply do not understand how those methods work. No, there is NOT geological evidence of a Genesis style great flood. You can’t just pick and choose little tidbits of inconclusive information and fit them together to support your beliefs.

I could go on and on. The point, however, is this: just because you want to believe that something is true, doesn’t mean that you can claim it is science or is supported by scientific concepts which you don’t understand!

Quite frankly, I’m scared shitless for the future of this country. Ignorance of the rational, observable world is not only rampant, it’s encouraged and celebrated! World leaders are chosen based on their religious convictions instead of their qualifications. There are HUGE political debates over scientific concepts being held by people who have no understanding of what they are even debating. Everyone rails on about how embryonic stem cell research is wrong, but how many people actually know what a stem cell is?

It’s not far off, I’m going to be ready to desert this sinking ship with the rats of reason. Who’s with me?
