Finally! I have a nice long break from school and all the inherent studying, stress, and cold, hard judgement involved with being a full-time student. Huzzah!!
I will also be travelling during break this year. It’ll be awesome! I’m going to spend a week camping out in Death Valley with a bunch of Stanford geologists and grad students. How freakin’ cool is that? Of course, that also means that I will have absolutely no access to internets during said trip. I know, I know… It’s going to be hard going cold-turkey like that, but sometimes we have to make these sacrifices. Once the shakes and the hallucinations have eased I’ll take lots of pictures of the trip and display them all in a blaze of glory upon my triumphant return to the world of cyber-space!
Wish me luck! I hear there are rattlesnakes and scorpions out there…

I know I haven’t been posting all that consistently. I know this. Sorry. See, there’s this school thing that takes up some of my time and with exam week I just haven’t had the time. I guess I suck at this blogging thing.
In fact, I’ve been doing some thinking specifically about the blog. I’d like to streamline my writing on here. While the current format of spewing whatever nonsense is going through my head onto the interwebs works ok, I am developing an agenda. The blog will be more focused and theme-ish. One of these days.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything you’d like to see on the blog here? I want to have like some recurring themes or weekly segments that I can do. Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments.

The fact that people this stupid exist or the fact that so many people agree with them. No wait, I know exactly which is worse! So, remember a little while back when I mentioned Ray Comfort’s new book? I just finished reading this article (found via Pharyngula) and I swear I’m about 10% stupider by volume as a result. I just saw this guy at a comedy club in San Francisco and I laughed my bloody arse off. Definitely watch the video if you have a few minutes and are not easily offended. This guy doesn’t hold anything back so be warned… The third video has some great religious cracks also.

I borrowed this video from Kay over at Perhaps We Learned Something and thought it was an interesting statistical slap in the face for all the people who refuse to notice the US gradually slipping out of its position as a world superpower. Now don’t get me wrong. I do love my country. But we aren’t the technological powerhouse we used to be and that status is not improving. We’ve got a lot of competition out there people and, as a nation, we have done very little to make ourselves competitive in the way of education and technological research. I’m curious what our world will look like in 50 years.

You know, every time I hear either Ray Comfort or Kirk Cameron spewing their feeble strawman arguments I die a little inside. They apparently have a website now that is dedicated to debunking those ‘angry atheists’ and nothing else. The things on this site are amazing to say the least. Their articles are full of logical fallacies (behold the No True Scotsman fallacy) and a total misunderstanding of science. You would think that grown men could refine their ridiculously childish points considering the fact that atheists and scientists have been confronting them for years over the fallacious nature of their every premise regarding science and non-belief. But no, they still argue like a couple of 2nd graders who just didn’t grasp what that Nova doc they watched was actually saying. Their every word is a rebuttal to a caricature of science and a non-existent atheist straw man. It’s actually quite painful to watch, as you can see: Read the rest of this entry »

I’m posting the first few videos of the series here. If you’ve never watched the videos by ThunderfOOt on creationist stupidity, I highly recommend them. The guy obviously has plenty of material to work with as he has made nearly 30 of these thus far. Read the rest of this entry »

Apparently Ray Comfort has a new book, You Can Lead an Atheist to Evidence But You Can’t Make Him Think. Yeah, I know! I didn’t know he could read or write either! If you are not familiar with this dynamo of logical debates, he’s become well-known for his banana argument for the existence of god and his postulated existence of the Crocoduckas an acceptable proof of evolution. And when he joins forces with Kirk Cameron of bad 80’s sitcom fame it’s like a bonehead super-hero team! This can be seen in their little ‘debate’ with the Rational Response Squad. Yeah. He wrote a book. Apparently this book is highly critical of and condescending toward atheists and science. I think that’s cute. A-freakin-dorable actually.
Amazon has a ‘Look Inside’ option for this book, so I went to a random page for this little gem:
It’s not easy to be an atheist. He has to deny both common reason and logic. But, it seems worth it to some, because they think you then become a moral free agent. However, you can look at the miracle of creation and deny the genius of the Creator, but He still exists… You can call any reference to the bible “circular reasoning,” but that Word will judge you on Judgement Day whether you believe it or not.
I looked at a few pages and it’s the same everywhere. Intellectually bankrupt, self-righteous drivel that does little more than proclaim that God and Jesus are real and that atheists will be sorry. Oh and the bit about becoming an atheist so that one can me a ‘moral free agent’? A quick look into any state prison should remedy that little misconception. You’d think that if all we cared about was not being held accountable by God then more of us would be incarcerated. As moral free agents and all. Hmmm.
Regardless, Comfort hasn’t gotten any better since his days of attempting fellatio with a banana on television.
Ray, the reason why atheists seem so angry to you is not that we are bitter or jaded or any of these things. It’s just that whenever you discuss religion there is this tsunami of verbal defecation spewn out in all directions. Most of us value honest, rational discussions and find it extremely irritating when someone like you – having the intellectual maturity of a petulant 3rd grader – starts throwing out straw-men and accusations at us.

As far as men go, I suppose I’m a little strange. I’m not the typical guy who’s going to jump into bed with whatever woman happens to be willing at the time. That’s not to say, however, that I never wasthat guy, but I’m not now. These days I take sex pretty seriously and am not particularly interested in one-night stands or meaningless encounters. Now, what I want to know is this: why is it that women can make a man jump through hoops for months before having sex with him and it’s ok, but when a man chooses to wait it’s horribly insulting?
Allow me to clarify here. Usually if I’m in a situation where coital business is on the table and I turn it down, it’s likely because I actually like the girl and want to be careful in regards to physical interaction. It’s not because I’m uninterested. In fact I would likely not be in that situation to begin with if I weren’t interested. There is also a component of what I know about myself and how I tend to react after the fact to sexual situations that happen too quickly, but that’s a different topic entirely. Yet every time I’ve been the one deciding that it would be a better idea to wait, it’s as if I’ve insulted someones mom or pissed on a communion wafer. Is it really so hard to believe that some men have enough depth of character to not immediately discard reason or consideration at the merest hint of blood flowing in their nether-regions? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to present myself as some paragon of self-control. I am weak after all.
I’d like to get people’s opinion on this? Why is sex etiquette so one-sided? Why is it accepted knowledge that men have to earn sex whilst women are entitled to it? I personally don’t think anyone should feel like they are entitled to sex with anyone else. I’m sure that there is some psycho-sociological explanation that I’m not clever enough to notice, and no, ‘because men have all the power everywhere else’ is not good enough.
